THIRD COURT OF APPEALS IN AUSTIN
2018 GENERAL ELECTIONS UPDATE
The Third Court of Appeals, based in Austin, Texas, has a membership of six justices. Winning all four contested races in 2018, Democrats flipped partisan control of the court on November 6, 2018, to be effective with the start of the year 2019.
The un-official results are as follows:
Place 2: Democrat Edward Smith defeated Republican Incumbent Cindy Olson Bourland with 52.9% of the votes
Place 3: Democrat Chari Kelly defeated Republican Incumbent Scott Field with 54.32% of the votes
Place 5: Democrat Thomas J. Baker defeated Republican Incumbent Scott Field with 54.32% of the votes
Place 6: Democrat Gisela D. Triana defeated Republican Mike Toth with 54.35% of the votes (There was a write-in candidate who garnered 0.15% of the vote)

2015 PERSONNEL CHANGES ON THE AUSTIN COURT OF APPEALS
Cindy Olson Bourland was selected to fill the Third Court of Appeals position vacated by Justice Jeff Rose who is now Chief Justice of the Austin Court of Appeals.The appointment to Place 2 was made by Governor Rick Perry just prior to the end of his term of office. Bourland comes to the court from private practice.
In February 2015, former Chief Justice J. Woodfin Jones, who had not sought re-election for a second term in 2014, went back to private practice as an appellate specialist with the ALEXANDER DUBOSE JEFFERSON & TOWNSEND LLP ("ADJT"), a firm he helped found in 2003. See firm's press release. Former Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court, Wallace B. Jefferson, is also an attorney with this firm, which has offices in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, and bills itself as an "internationally-recognized appellate boutique".
2014 ELECTIONS - OPEN SEAT (BENCH) CONTEST
The race for chief justice was a contest without an incumbent, Chief Woodie Jones having decided not to seek re-election for another term. Republican Jeff Rose defeated Democrat Diane Henson, who had previously served on the court, with a margin of 54.12% to 45.87%. The total number of votes cast in this race was 568,250.
